DISCIPLINE – THE MEANS TO AN END

I started taking cold showers about a year or so ago and its still a daily struggle for me, so this article hit me perfectly. For those of you participating in Lent, you also might find this perfectly timed…

From Self-Knowledge and Self-Discipline, 1916

By Basil William Maturin

We do not endure [self-discipline] merely for its own sake, but for what lies beyond it. And we bear those acts of self-denial and self-restraint because we feel and know full well that through such acts alone can we regain the mastery over all our misused powers and learn to use them with a vigour and a joy such as we have never known before…

It is as though one who had a great talent for music but had no technical training, and consequently could never produce the best results of his art, were to put himself under a great master. The first lessons he will have to learn will be, for the most part, to correct his mistakes, not to do this and not to do that; it will seem to him that he has lost all his former freedom of expression, that he is held back by all sorts of technical rules, that whenever he seeks to let himself go he is checked and hampered. And it is no doubt true. But he will soon begin to realise that as he learns more and suffers in the learning, possibilities of utterance reveal themselves which he has never dreamed of. He knows, he feels, that he is on the right path, and as the channels are prepared and the barriers against the old bad methods more firmly fixed, he feels the mighty tide of his genius rise and swell, he hears the shout of the gathering waters as they sweep before them every obstacle and pour forth in a mad torrent of glorious sound. All those days of restraint and suffering are crowned with the joy of the full and perfect expression of his art. The restraint and discipline he knew full well in those seemingly unfruitful days were but the means to an end. The end is always before him, and the end is positive expression. The dying to his old untrained and bad methods is but the birth throes of a larger and richer action…

Without such an inspiring motive [discipline] is meaningless, it is cruel self-torture. We need—who does not know it—to fill our life, not to empty it. Life is too strong a thing, our nature is too positive, to be content with mere restraint and repression. Many a soul who has given up one thing after another and emptied its life of interest after interest, learns to its dismay that its energies finding no means of expression turn inward and revenge themselves in morbid self-analysis and sickly scruples. They need an outlet; they need interests. You may check the flow of a stream while you are preparing to divert its channel, but you cannot stop it. If you try, it will only gather force behind the barriers that hold it back, beat them down and rush through with a strength and volume all the greater for the restraint. And the stream of life cannot be merely held back. Many a man trying thus to repress himself finds after a time that temptations have only grown stronger and passions more violent, and that he seems to have become worse rather than better through the temporary resistance. What he needed, what might have protected him from failure and despair, was to be taught that all the restraint was but temporary, and in order to turn the stream into its true channel.

BON IVER – TOWERS (official video)

Bon Iver – Towers (Official Music Video) from Bon Iver on Vimeo.

For anyone still wondering who this Grammy winner is, here is his newest video. Directed by Nabil, the visual offering for Bon Iver’s “Towers” is a tribute to the lonely. Set in a desolate expanse of forest, the viewer is privy to an old man who trudges through land and sea before finding an untimely end. Matching appropriate visuals to music, “Towers” is truly an achievement through and through…

SKRILLEX – BANGARANG

Fresh off three Grammy wins and a successful tour still underway, Skrillex unleashes the new visuals for his title track off the recent Bangarang EP on Big Beat/Atlantic/OWSLA. Hate as you will, but i can not bring myself to dislike anything that has any sort of lost boys references. And honestly – I like this emerging theme of Skrillex’s videos: don’t underestimate the youth.

AT LEAST I TRIED

I have a great friend named Sheena with two boys ages 4 and 5 – I of course call them Walker and Texas Ranger respectively. Outside on Sunday morning they decided to become hardcore-parkour experts and tried sprinting on top of the parking blocks outside of our church.

I could maybe stop them by mumbling something about the dangers of concrete. But who knows? Maybe this quirky sport is going to take off like planking? Who am I to squash such adolescent  genius?

Here’s how it works… The little Emperors teeter on one edge of the concrete beam. They then charge ahead as if they believe they can run across the whole beam at full-throttle. Then at the end they go tumbling off, awkwardly smacking into the ground with so little awareness that they don’t even raise their hands to break their fall.

At this point Walker quits, but not Texas Ranger. And or his second attempt, he does not even consider reducing his speed. He manages an only slightly more gracious half-roll as he collides with the ground. Two strides. Grass stain. Then four. Skinned knees. And so it goes.

To spare you a recount of attempts five through fifty, here’s the cliff notes: As a young toddler, parking block sprinting is a full contact sport, and honestly it’s rarely marked with success. What progress there is looks less like achieving balance, and more like figuring out better ways of falling.

With so little success, I literally begin to applaud the particularly good falls. I indulged in a little bit of man pride coming from this kid, his determination, and honestly the fact that he hadn’t cried yet.

I know it’s a little bizarre to draw meaning from the antics of a four year old, but I can’t help but be a little jealous that this lil dude was so undeterred by falling. I mean, he doesn’t even stop to look around and see who is watching. He doesn’t analyze how whether people will judge him if he falls too many times… Falling, to him, is nothing more than the moment that lies between his attempts at greatness. And this makes me think that instinctively, Texas Ranger knows something that most of us spend a good chunk of adulthood trying to re-learn.

When it comes to this random thought of Falling Theology, I would probably start with this idea:

If you can’t remember the last time you fell, that may mean you’re not taking on any new challenges. And in that case, after a while, perfection becomes a fraudulent trophy, don’t you think?

Another piece of advice that has occurred to me while he was lying on the ground goes like this: It’s okay.

We should run hard when we can, for as long as we can - But when we can’t run, we should walk – and, if there comes a time when we can’t walk, its ok – Fall. And in general, when possible, try your hardest to fall forward rather than backward. And after that, when you get up enough energy, you might only be able to manage a crawl, and if we’re too exhausted to crawl, well, then… all you might be able to do is to lay on the ground, but at least reach out in the right direction. But, after all that, as soon as you can, it makes sense to get up, right??

Many people finally succeed after getting up one more time than they fall. Thats the essential key to success right? Fall down 7 times – Get up 8?!

From a biblical sense, look at the greatest leaders in the bible:  What if Daniel would’ve let captivity break him?  What if David would’ve wallowed in his dad’s failure to recognize his potential? What if Joseph would’ve stopped or given up after being sold into slavery?

I conclude that, there is NEVER a moment of true triumph had it not been for the moment that they all got back up. So, whats your story, and by story i might mean excuse. You too hurt, too scared, too tired, too broken, to poor, too lazy??  Because even if this is the hundredth time that you’ve fallen, it only makes sense you get up, because as long as your going forward, who is anybody to tell you off or judge you or tell you any differently. And on that day that maybe it is too much, and your taken from this world… you can rest assured that your gravestone can confidently read “at least i tried” – and honestly, that’s more than the majority of people in this world are going to be able to say…
